Gulf Oil Spill Clean Up Supplies for Wildlife
Kevin Albuit of Flooring Solutions & More in Manchester, CT is collecting much-needed clean up supplies to help the wildlife affected by the oil spill in the Gulf. Since Manchester is a bit of a hike for many of the PAWS supporters, one of our volunteers has offered to be both a collection site and to drive the donations to Manchester. Please do NOT bring donations to the PAWS Shelter as we do not have the room to store them. All the collected supplies will be driven down South in the month of July. The list of items needed and what they are used for is below: MATERIALS NEEDED:The sheets and towels are used to place over birds and other wildlife to alleviate stress. Towels are also used after the rinsing phase of the wash cycle just before the bird is placed in the drying station. Disposable bed pads and newspapers work great in lining cardboard boxes when in the field collecting oiled wildlife-it helps keep the bottom from breaking down. Q-tips, gauze pads and toothbrushes are used to clean up the nostrils and beaks. Toothbrushes also help in cleaning the delicate feathers on the heads of birds. Dawn dish soap is the only cleaning agent used for oiled wildlife as it has been proven to work the best (each bird will use more than 90 ounces!). Pedialyte is given to the birds before the clean up process to help restore liquids and essential nutrients needed to stabilize the animal. Pepto Bismol is given to coat the stomach as many of the birds will not only have oil on their skin and feathers but most have ingested it too. Cardboard boxes are needed to transport the oiled wildlife and duct tape is needed to seal boxes and bags. Aluminum foil is needed to seal collections taken from each animal for evidence. PLEASE NOTE:We know that PAWS folks care about all animals, not just pets! Thank you for your support!Make on donation on our secure server. Just click on the "Click & Pledge" icon below.
